Inside Bubuan Cave | Mysterious Sacred Cave of Northeast India
This cave is sacred to the Rongmei Naga people… outsiders rarely enter.
Bubuan/Bhubhuan Ching, popularly known as Bhuban Hills, is a sacred religious site for the followers of the traditional indigenous faiths Poupei Chapriak and Heraka of the Rongmei Naga tribe. It is believed to be the abode of Apou Baomei Bhuanchaniu, a principal deity of the Rongmei indigenous religion. Located in Cachar district of Assam, near the Assam–Manipur–Mizoram border, the hills hold deep historical, cultural, and spiritual significance.
Historically, several Rongmei villages once existed in the Bhuban Hills. Though these villages are now abandoned, their descendants are settled in different parts of Cachar district. The most sacred site of the hills is the Bhuanchaniu Cave (Bubuan Cave), also known as the Naga Cave (also known as Naga Vishnu/Bishnu Cave), which was visited by revered spiritual leaders Haipou Jadonang and Rani Gaidinliu to seek divine blessings.
Today, the sacred site is maintained by an indigenous faith committee, supported entirely through private donations. Every year, thousands of Zeliangrong pilgrims from Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland gather here for the Annual Bubuan Cave/Hill Ritual Ceremony, underscoring the importance of preserving the sanctity, identity, and spiritual heritage of this revered place.
