Marilyn Monroe's final year in 1962 was marked by some of the most poignant and revealing photo sessions, capturing her in moments that have since become iconic.
In June 1962, Bert Stern conducted the renowned "The Last Sitting" at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. Over three days, he photographed Marilyn in various states, from glamorous gowns to intimate, unguarded moments. These images, published posthumously, offer a raw and personal glimpse into her life just weeks before her untimely passing.
Shortly thereafter, in July 1962, George Barris captured some of Marilyn's last public images. Photographed at Santa Monica Beach and in the Hollywood Hills, these photos depict her in a more relaxed and candid manner, reflecting her natural beauty and charm. Barris's work is often regarded as a poignant farewell to the beloved star.
Earlier that year, in February 1962, Willy Rizzo photographed Marilyn in Beverly Hills. Despite initial scheduling challenges, the shoot resulted in a series of elegant and intimate portraits. Rizzo later described Marilyn as having an air of underlying sadness during the session, capturing a side of her that was both vulnerable and graceful.
These photographers—Stern, Barris, and Rizzo—each played a pivotal role in preserving the legacy of Marilyn Monroe through their lenses. Their work continues to offer us a window into the life of one of Hollywood's most enduring icons.
