This video takes you into a 2nd grade SEAL classroom where Designated English Language Development (ELD) is intentionally planned to support multilingual learners. Teachers will see how SEAL’s approach integrates collaborative practice, scaffolds, and oral rehearsal to help English Learners build both academic vocabulary and confidence in communication.
The lesson focuses on a supply and demand unit (goods and services) where the teacher uses sentence frames, sequencing graphic organizers, and partner practice to prepare students for independent and group work. English Learners practice language in small groups while their peers engage in content-rich collaborative tasks like research projects, business plans, and narrative retells.
For educators and school leaders, this classroom example demonstrates how Designated ELD:
Prepares students with the academic language needed for content learning.
Provides oral practice in a supportive small-group setting.
Builds confidence that transfers into Integrated ELD and whole-class learning.
Supports rigorous instruction while keeping all students engaged.
This video highlights how SEAL’s model helps teachers implement effective ELD strategies and how leaders can support systemic practices that ensure multilingual learners thrive.
