Описание: We planted Rensonii (Scientific Name: Desmodium rensonii ) last December 2021 due to its reputation of being a short-term harvest forage, at around 6-8months from planting.

Desmodium rensonii has been called "alfalfa of the tropics" because of its high protein content of around 20-23%. Unfortunately, our rensonii and other forages like flemingia, Indigofera, Acid Ipil-ipil and Calliandra were outgrown by Napier Grass and native weeds since we just purchased our Grass Chopper a few months ago, and our Napier was not harvested at the right time. Without a chopper, giving Napier to goats will have so much wastage since goats cannot eat the stalks.

We were surprised that despite the overgrowth of Napier and weeds, we discovered rows of Rensonii which had grown to about 2m, with flowers and seeds 9 months after planting. An unexpected forage in the middle of sugarcane-high napier, with many seeds for planting!!!

This is great since rensonii seeds is always out-of-stock.

Based on a 2003 study "Nutritive value of Desmodium rensonii " by Paduano, D.C. Jr (Xavier Univ., Cagayan de Oro City (Philippines)), findings showed that based on proximate, detergent fiber, and mineral content analyses, the nutrient composition of D. rensonii was comparable with that of alfalfa. The in situ digestibility of DM and CP of D. rensonii at different incubation periods were tabulated. Both DM and CP of rensonii had high disappearance within 24 hours of rumen incubation at 72-hour incubation, DM disappearance was 89.13%, while CP was more likely to be completely digested with 97.10% disappearance. The CP content and digestibility of DM and CP of D. rensonii suggested that it can be a good protein supplement for ruminants.
