Описание:
The lifeboat is fitted with a marine diesel engine.
Usually air-cooled or water-cooled (keel cooling) type.
It is a 4-stroke, single-cylinder or multi-cylinder, non-reversible engine.
Power transmitted directly to a fixed pitch propeller.
Starting Method:
Manual crank, spring starter, or battery electric start.
Some engines have compressed air start (less common).
Fuel Used:
Marine gas oil or diesel.
Fuel tank painted white to avoid solar heating and vapour formation.
Sufficient fuel to run for 24 hours at 6 knots, as per SOLAS/LSA Code.
Cooling System:
Most are keel-cooled systems (closed loop using hull-mounted pipes).
Avoids seawater contamination.
Lubrication System:
Splash type or wet sump lubrication.
Oil level to be checked during weekly maintenance.
Maintenance (Weekly Checks):
Check fuel level.
Run engine for at least 3 minutes.
Check oil level.
Observe abnormal sound or smoke.
Check battery voltage (if electric start).
Drain water from fuel filter if required.
Safety Features:
Air intake shutdown flap (in case of runaway).
Engine governor to prevent overspeed.
Fire protection: engine enclosure and cooling/sprinkler system.
Engine Endurance (SOLAS Requirement):
Run continuously for 24 hours at minimum speed of 6 knots.
Should start within 2 minutes at -15°C.
