Jicama is a tuber vegetable from Central America that you can enjoy raw or cooked. When you see it, it can seem a little intimidating, but once you know what to do with it it can actually be really easy to prepare.
First, you have to get past the bark-like skin. To enjoy jicama, you have to peel it- but don't try using a vegetable peeler. It's a lot easier and safer to peel it with a sharp knife. Once peeled, you can slice it into quarters, sticks, or even cubes.
What's it taste like?
Raw, it can taste a lot like a savory apple while cooked it can even have a similar texture to a potato- making it a perfect substitute for French fries.
You can eat jicama raw like any other raw vegetable- plain or with a dip, or you can cook it to prepare healthier fries, chips, or even lower carb taco shells! With only 25 calories and 3 grams of fiber per every half-cup of raw jicama, it can make a great option for any meal plan.
