FGM AT 66% IN ISIOLO: STAKEHOLDERS, RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND ELDERS SAY NO TO FGM BY 2030

Описание: As the world marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), SHARP Organization, Horn of Africa Institute, Plan International, and other partners organized a workshop at a hotel in Isiolo County. The aim of the forum was to sensitize members of the public on ways of completely eliminating FGM in communities by the year 2030.

Dorothy Okemo, a SHARP project coordinator, said that achieving this goal requires the involvement of various stakeholders, emphasizing the need for collective investment and commitment to ensure everyone plays a role in eradicating the harmful practice.

The workshop also brought together community elders and religious leaders, who stated that they have already abandoned the outdated practice and pledged to continue fighting FGM with all their efforts.

Omar Godana, a community elder from Isiolo, said that FGM has no place in modern society and offers no benefit to girls. He stressed that the practice violates human rights and called on the government to allocate sufficient funds to combat FGM and other forms of gender-based violence.

Religious leaders, led by Sheikh Ahmed Sett, noted that FGM is not permitted in holy scriptures. They pledged to use places of worship to educate and guide the public on the dangers and negative effects of FGM.

Ali Yarrow Somo from the Gender and Equality Commission stated that every citizen must become an ambassador in the fight against FGM, noting that the number of affected girls fluctuates from time to time.

His remarks were echoed by Joy Nkirote, who called on those still perpetuating the practice to stop completely.

Peter Ndambo, the Assistant County Commissioner for Isiolo Central, affirmed that the government will not relent in addressing the outdated practice among residents and warned those who continue to engage in it that firm action will be taken.
