So you want to learn sign language and not quite sure where to start?
Once you've learnt the fingerspelling alphabet ( • BSL alphabet (with voice) ) then the next stage is general greetings.
Here we look at some of the greetings in British Sign Language.
Hello
How are you?
I'm fine
I'm alright
Thank you
Pleased to meet you
In BSL when ever we ask a question you have "furrowed eyebrows" to indicate questioning (How are you?)
In the signs for "Pleased to meet you" you'll notice that the sign "nice" is used - because that's what it means, rather than the sign "please". When signing "meet you" you'll notice the 2 index fingers where one meets the other.
This is directional. One person is walking towards the other.
That's just a little explanation on some of the linguistic elements of British Sign Language.
