I woke up on Stacey’s couch.Jacket still on. That’s how you know it wasn’t sleep. Just an intermission.Head pounding. No one around. Rain tapping the windows, setting the speed of the day.
Light leaked through the blinds, catching dust in the air. It drifted slowly, like room was asleep.
“Babylon” echoed in my head. Not the word. The sound.
I remembered someone trying to explain it last night. Babylon, the oppressive state. Zion the liberation. Not literal. What is? I nodded like I understood, fixated on the music.
I couldn’t remember the details now. Just walls of bass. Space inside sound. Echoes like messages bouncing around long after the sender’s gone. A noise that made Apollo 17 feel obsolete.
“Babylon.”Still swinging through my skull like a wrecking ball.
I found the fridge, poured some orange juice, drank it like it might apologize for the last eighteen hours. I couldn’t remember the last time I ate. I didn’t try too hard.
Outside, the rain cut clean. I pulled my collar up and walked. The sky was too bright for how late I felt. My schedule was upside down. The office door had been closed more than open lately. My last paying case wrapped days ago. Things were getting thin.
But thin I know. Grim I know. The bottom’s solid ground. Something to push off from, if you ever want to.
Babylon wouldn’t leave me alone.
I thought about the girl in Room 27. The envelope. Mr. Moody. The van.I thought about how bitter I’d gotten. Bitter and lonely. Mad at the leaders. Mad at the followers. Mad at the rebels. Mad, just mad. And crazy, can’t leave that out. It was really time to question my sanity, chasing a case that comes to me in dreams. Lost on where dreams end and real begins,
Somewhere between the rain and the vitamin C waking up whatever was left of my brain, it hit me. Slow. Not dramatic.
I’d been furious at the system around me, like it had failed me, but what had I been doing for myself? What was my plan to fix anything? Myself, the world, anything?
I kept thinking like the problems were all out there. Something to fight. Something to burn. All while running my own place into the ground. Like killing the pain counted as resistance. Like chasing wasn’t running. And the thought was almost there. I was just on the edge of connecting something big when the sound cut through it.
Radio first, engine second. Suddenly behind me. Ripping through the rain like it didn’t care what I was thinking.
I turned just in time to see it.
Brown paint. Long body. Barbarian airbrushed on the side. Exactly like the dream. No guesswork. No symbolism left to debate. The dream van.
It blew past me and was gone.
No slowing down.No chance to follow.
Just enough time to know I wasn’t imagining things.
The question stopped being about my sanity.
It became, who is Mr. Moody.
