It's not every year the Navesink River in Monmouth County, NJ completely freezes over- and it's certainly not every year you happen to catch the Van Nostrand Cup taking place either!
Our prolonged cold weather stretch from late January into early February made it all possible. The Van Nostrand Cup is a historic ice sailing tournament that takes place only when the ice is thick enough on the river. On Monday, February 9, the day of the event, ice on the Navesink measured up to 10 inches thick! 🧊 🤯 📏
While some locations are fortunate enough to host the event annually, the Van Nostrand Cup was only held on the Navesink River a grand total of four times since it began back in 1891! The last time it took place on the Navesink was in 2003.
