🏞️ Overview
Location: Bukit Brown is located between Lornie Road and Mount Pleasant in central Singapore.
Established: In 1922 by the municipal authorities.
Size: At its peak, it spanned over 200 hectares, making it the largest Chinese cemetery outside of China at the time.
🕰️ Historical Background
Pre-1922
The area was already being used as a burial ground by wealthy Chinese families since the mid-19th century.
It was part of the Ong clan’s private land, later sold to the government.
Municipal Cemetery (1922 Onwards)
Officially opened as Bukit Brown Municipal Cemetery.
Designed to serve the Chinese community, especially the Peranakan and Hokkien communities.
Featured traditional Chinese grave architecture, reflecting the socio-economic status of the deceased.
🏛️ Cultural Significance
The cemetery is an important repository of Chinese cultural heritage in Singapore.
Tombstones feature inscriptions in Chinese, dialects, and English, providing genealogical and sociocultural insights.
It also reflects the migration patterns of Chinese settlers and their integration into Singaporean society.
🌳 Biodiversity and Ecology
Over the years, Bukit Brown became a lush secondary forest, home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including rare bird species.
It has been recognized by nature groups for its ecological importance.
⚠️ Development and Controversy
In 2011, the Singapore government announced plans to construct a highway through part of the cemetery.
This led to public outcry and the formation of the “Save Bukit Brown” movement.
Over 4,000 graves were exhumed to make way for development.
The controversy sparked greater awareness about heritage conservation in Singapore.
🧭 Legacy and Preservation
Efforts have been made to document and preserve the history of Bukit Brown:
Volunteers conduct guided heritage walks.
Projects like All Things Bukit Brown and Singapore Heritage Society have created archives and digital maps.
In 2014, it was listed in the World Monuments Watch by the World Monuments Fund.
