Tesla enjoys the highest safety ratings. Achieving a 5-star rating in car safety from the NHTSA is the ultimate reward for manufacturers. It's like the Holy Grail of safety ratings and the maximum score any car can get in a safety test. Tesla’s Model S and Model X achieved phenomenal results in the pole test and in rollover risk, which is nine times better than any other car.

The vehicles were given a similar rating in the Euro NCAP tests. The Tesla Model 3 was even singled out for a superior rating for front crash prevention and was chosen as the 2019 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, or Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. Globally, most Tesla models have passed with flying colors from safety organizations in North America, Europe, and Australia. To explain why Tesla cars are so safe, CEO Elon Musk said one of the main features present in all Tesla vehicles is the long “crumple zone,” which is almost three times longer than in conventional automobiles. The space where a huge engine and steel block would be becomes a type of buffer zone that can absorb the force of a collision.
Even the battery contributes to safety
The battery pack in a Tesla vehicle also adds to the safety features of the car. In the Model X, for instance, the heavy battery is distributed along the bottom of the car, making the vehicle less top-heavy and reducing the risk of rolling, which is a common problem for conventional SUVs. Together with the extended crumple zone, the Model X is much safer even for the other vehicle in a collision.
Inside the Model 3 is another feature that contributes to neutralizing the force of a collision: an extremely thick curtain airbag. One real example of the safety of a Tesla vehicle is an incident where one driver of a Model S crashed into a telephone pole and then hit two trees and a telephone box. The impact was so severe that the batteries of the car flew out and were strewn around on the ground. The driver, however, was unharmed and totally safe.
Hardware and software work together to detect and avoid accidents
Every Tesla car has been integrated with hardware and software to prevent accidents. There’s a safety feature that can detect if drivers suddenly start to drift into another lane. Instead of the driver having to respond (possibly in a shocked or surprised state), the car will take over and simply return back to the lane gently. If you aren’t fast enough where braking is concerned, you don’t have to worry because the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system can recognize an obstacle in the path and immediately stop the vehicle. While cars like Volvo have introduced a similar automatic braking system in the past, Tesla has perfected the feature with more powerful cameras, radars, and sensors that are technically superior at detecting potential collisions and avoiding them.
