How to gather roots and process them for bark canoes or bark baskets. This is how i do it. Boiling allows me to peel off the bark of the roots very efficiently. Once I have my precious roots, they must be split in halves and then halves again. The same process is used for birch bark baskets.
I then proceed to do my gunwale lashings. I must complete 40 lashings total just for the gunwales. Once the roots are processed and split to size, it is possible to tie them in bundles and dry them. Once well dried they can be kept almost indefinetly. They must be soaked in water for an hour or so before being used for lashings once again.
The canoe model that I am building is based off of Edwin tappan adney's books on bark canoes. The model is a maliseet temporary hunting canoe and would be built quickly when needed. It is based off of a model built by a first nations builder in 1895.
Please watch episodes 1 and 2 to see how I got to this point in the building process.
