한국민속촌에서의 정월대보름 맞이
Today marks the fifteenth day on the Lunar calendar and the first full moon of the Lunar New Year.
Koreans have long celebrated the occasion in many ways.
Lee Shi-hoo tells us more. Sighs, exclaims, and cheers...
People get together to play "Yutjeom"... where the players predict their fortune for the year ahead depending on how thrown sticks, known as "yut", fall.
"Yutjeom" is one of many traditional activities enjoyed by Koreans on the day of the first full moon in the lunar calendar.
The day is known in Korean as "Jeongwol Daeboreum".
Jeongwol literally means "the first lunar month" and Daeboreum, "the great full moon".
To celebrate the day, many traditional festivities have been revived at the Korean Folk Village in Yong-in city this month.
"We've prepared many rituals to wish for a good year ahead."
Visitors get a chance to make copies of tiger paintings during Saehwajjiggi, which literally means "new picture imprinting".
In traditional Korean culture, it is said that having pictures of tiger on one's front door will ward off misfortune... due to the animal's strong spirit.
People can enjoy other traditional games like cornhole, archery, and "yutnori" a traditional Korean board game.
"Playing traditional games together with my family was really fun."
The highlight of the Daeboreum festival is the burning of the daljip or "moon house".
Daljip refers to a heap of straw and pine branches supported by bamboo poles. People write down their wishes on a piece of paper and tie it to a doll made out of straw.
They then place the dolls on the daljip.
As the evening nears, the daljip is set on fire. A black cloud of smoke surges into the sky and sparks scatter...hopefully warding off bad luck and bringing a trouble-free new year.
The sputtering sounds of burning bamboo poles, believed to cast away evil spirits, are heard as people make a wish.
"Since we are all going through a difficult time due to COVID-19, I wished for the well-being of my family and the citizens of the country so we can overcome the difficulties and have a good and happy new year."
"The hearts of the people here...are as full as the moon on Daeboreum...as they wish for a good year ahead. Lee Shi-hoo, Arirang News."
