One famous text, the Hymn to Ninkasi, praises the Sumerian goddess of brewing while simultaneously describing the beer-making process. The recipe involved fermenting barley bread in water, producing a thick, nutritious drink consumed through straws to filter out grain residue. Beer was safer than water and rich in calories, making it a staple of daily life.
Beer in Sumerian society functioned as food, medicine, currency, and religious offering. Workers—including temple laborers—were often paid in beer rations. Different strengths existed for different social classes, showing early economic organization.
These tablets prove that writing initially developed not only for administration and trade, but also to record everyday human culture. Long before formal cookbooks, humanity preserved its knowledge through beer.
