Civita di Bagnoregio is a historic village located in the Lazio region of central Italy, in the Province of Viterbo. It is considered one of the most picturesque villages in Italy, thanks to its unique position on top of a rocky cliff, giving the appearance of being suspended between the sky and the earth. It can be accessed by a narrow pedestrian bridge, and in the past, it was connected to the outside world by a natural bridge that has eroded over time.
The origins of Civita di Bagnoregio date back to ancient times, with the village known during the Etruscan period. In the Middle Ages, it became a religious and commercial hub and flourished during the Roman and medieval periods. However, the village faced challenges in modern times due to the continuous erosion of the cliff it was built on, causing a significant decline in population in the 20th century.
