Cotton Tail is written over the so-called "Rhythm Changes". The said term refers to a chord progression that derives from George Gershwin's song "I Got Rhythm". The song became popular, and within a few years jazz musicians began to write different "heads" (melodies) to the changes. Some of the better-known tunes that employ Rhythm changes are: Anthropology, Oleo, Moose the Mooche, Scrapple From The Apple and Cotton Tail. This version of Cotton Tail was performed live at a Jazz Party in Denver in 1977. The story behind the festival begins in 1963 when Dick Gibson, a Denver businessman, gathered together jazz musicians and friends in an Aspen hotel over the three-day Labor Day weekend to have a party. The festival became very popular and it is now known as the "Vail Jazz Party".
