Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting, and this is Publishing Defined.

This is the fifth and final part in a five-part video series on Getting Your Journal Article Published. This part is called, Promoting Your Article and Your Career.

Congratulations. Your manuscript has been accepted. You will be receiving page proofs to check and likely some points to clarify. After that, you should be posted on the journal website in a short period of time. Enjoy the moment.

Do not let this moment pass without realizing the importance of promoting your work, and therefore your career as well. There are some easy and simple things that you can do that will help spread the word about all of your effort and not let it go unnoticed and uncited.

First, social media: Choose one channel, perhaps Twitter or LinkedIn, and concentrate on building your connections. Use quotations from your work or key facts or statistics to spark interest and dialogue, instead of simply posting about your new article.
Next, academic social networking sites: Websites like ResearchGate and Acamedia.edu offer a great opportunity to promote your work and connect with others in their field. Members of the sites each have a user profile and can upload research output, including papers, data, negative results, patents, research proposals, presentations, and software source code.
Next, speak about your work: At all opportunities, give presentations or present posters of your work and include your article or links to it.
Next, try to find blogs or podcasts that you might be a guest on.
Next, every academic should have a website for themselves. With free or inexpensive website creation tools, it is easier and quicker than most people imagine. Talk about your background, research interests, and link to or post all articles you have been involved with.

Coordinate all these efforts with the journal publisher. They will appreciate your efforts, and likely support them. Make sure you use the best web address to promote the article.

Sometimes, your university or institution might help promote your work. Many have a public relations person specifically charged with issuing press releases or arranging media interviews with news sites, magazines, and newspapers. Check if this is an option at your institution.

Another reason to promote your work is the long-term benefit to your career and future work. By promoting your work, you are helping to disseminate your research today and improving your future chances of being published by increasing your altmetrics profile.

And most of all, get started on your next manuscript. This was just the first step in what I know will be a productive journey.
