This WBP Mini Jack is a well-appointed AK Pistol chambered for the very common 5.56x45 round. AKs have become extremely popular in the last couple of years, including the AK-74 and AK-105 chambered in the ever elusive 5.45x39 caliber. With the future of 5.45 becoming increasingly uncertain in the U.S., many folks have been looking for AKs chambered in 5.56 to scratch that small caliber AK itch.
While there are a handful of strong full size rifle options for those looking for 5.56 AKs, there are very few short barreled pistol configurations available. There's the FB Radom Beryl, which is very cool but uses all proprietary furniture so it doesn't offer a lot of aftermarket flexibility. Then there's the Zastava ZPAP85, which is a great option. For me personally, since I already have a Zastava ZPAP92, I didn't want to essentially get the same gun in a different caliber - especially considering the aftermarket limitations of Zastava firearms requiring Yugo patterned furniture and not having a side rail for optics mounting.
Enter WBP and the Mini Jack - an AK pistol with a 10" barrel that accepts standard AKM furniture, the most common AK furniture available. This is exactly what I was looking for. WBP is a newer company out of Poland that has quickly gained a fantastic reputation for building solid, reliable AKs with an excellent fit and finish. Imported by Arms of America and converted by Atlantic Firearms, WBP firearms can sometimes be a little pricier than the competition, but they can be worth it if they tick all of the boxes for what you're looking for. The Mini Jack, however, is very reasonably priced in my opinion - though that does come with some caveats. By default it comes with a virgin underfolder trunnion, so right out of the gate there's a little bit of work involved to get it set up well as either a braced pistol or as an SBR if you want to file a Form 1. The thread protector is also welded onto the threads as required for some imports, which is a pretty easy fix. But based on my time with it so far, I have to say I think it is very much worth the effort.
For this First Shots video I ran 160 rounds of Wolf Performance 223 steel cased 55 grain ammunition. I tested WBP, FB Radom and AC Unity 5.56 AK magazines, and also tested the VG6 Epsilon AK Brake and Definitive Arms Fighter Brake. I also tested it suppressed with my Dead Air Wolverine suppressor. In the video I discuss that this firearm might be a little overgassed - please understand this is not technically a bad thing. Many 5.56 firearms are intentionally overgassed because there is such a massive variety of 5.56/223 ammo available and the manufacturers want to be sure that it will run it all well. With that said, there are some things that can be done to fine tune the performance of your firearm if you know what ammo you plan on shooting. For AKs, one of the best tools is a KNS Piston, which I discuss here as well.
I absolutely love the 5.45 round, but the future of the caliber in the United States is very much uncertain. 5.56 or 223, however, is one of the most popular rounds in the country. It could very easily be said that grabbing an AK in 5.56 would be a much more practical choice over 5.45 in these uncertain times. I still love 5.45, but I do have to agree with the practicality of 5.56, and this WBP Mini Jack so far is everything that I wanted it to be.
There will be more videos on the WBP Mini Jack soon - including an SBR update after my Form 1 clears, as well as some Zenitco upgrades and other fun changes. Stay tuned!
