French orientalist painter Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) arrived in Marrakech in 1917 and decided to live there. In 1923 he bought a vast palm grove that was to become Jardin Majorelle.
In 1931 he commissioned architect Paul Sinoir to build him an artist's studio in the Art Deco style and around it designed a living work of art composed of exotic plants and rare species he'd collected on his travels. The garden was opened to the public in 1947, but fell into abandon on his death in 1962.
In 1980, Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent acquired the Jardin Majorelle, saving it from real estate developers. Since then the garden has been restored, with the addition of new plants. A Berber museum is now housed in the painter's studio; photography is not allowed but it's well worth a visit.
