During the 2019-20 fire season, more than 1.5 million hectares in Victoria have been burnt, threatening the survival of many native plants and animals.
With the fires closing in at Cape Howe in Victoria's far-east, a team of scientists and wildlife experts flew in for an emergency rescue.
Howe Flat in Croajingolong National Park is the only place in Victoria where the threatened Eastern Bristlebird lives. There are fewer than 200 left here.
Using careful planning and specialised techniques, the team set out to catch up to 20 birds, ensuring the survival of the species in Victoria if the area is wiped out by fire. Each bird was handled with care and health checks were carried out by zoo keepers.
15 individuals were captured.
The fires crept closer to the birds' habitat throughout the operation. Eventually, the team had to evacuate.
The birds were transported to Melbourne Zoo where they will live until the fire season has passed.
This was a partnership operation by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Zoos Victoria and Parks Victoria, with support from Monash University, University of Wollongong, Currumbin Sanctuary, the Australian Defence Force and Victorian Fisheries Authority.
