As the mutual successor to Video 3.5 HDD (and the slightly better named Surveillance HDD...seriously, come on Seagate), SkyHawk was part of the branding overhaul Seagate committed to in late 2016. The name itself is a play on "surveillance from the skies", with a hawk being used to emphasize the play on the phrase. It was definitely a lot more creative than Video 3.5 HDD and Surveillance HDD though...blegh.
This drive is based on the V9 platform, the same platform used by the BarraCuda ST4000DM005 which I previously also made a video on. As such, its underlying data layout resembles CMR (conventional magnetic recording) while using fewer platters to achieve the same capacity as its Lombard predecessor. Despite it using only 3 platters though, as a measure to keep it in line with other lower capacity SkyHawk models, its spindle speed remains at 5900 RPM.
The main difference between SkyHawk and its relatives BarraCuda and IronWolf is its firmware; these drives are tailored for sequential writes whereas its relatives have a better balance between random and sequential operations. Despite the difference, this drive is closer in similarity to IronWolf than BarraCuda simply because of its more aggressive idle behavior (which you'll hear plenty of).
