Johann Sebastian Bach’s Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659, is one of the most expressive chorale preludes from the Orgelbüchlein tradition (later included among the Leipzig Chorales).
This deeply meditative work is based on the Lutheran Advent hymn “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” (“Savior of the Nations, Come”), originally derived from the Latin hymn Veni redemptor gentium.
In BWV 659, Bach places the ornamented chorale melody in the soprano, richly embellished and singing above a gentle, flowing accompaniment. The result is a work of profound spirituality, longing, and quiet intensity — perfectly reflecting the Advent season.
