thoughts-
*disclaimer: these switches were sent over by unikeys to review, they did not review or have any input on the video or its contents. these thoughts are all my own.
TLDR- excellent switches. nearly identical feel to type R, tactile for the entire length of the travel. no weird noises and overall sound is very satisfying, not thin or harsh at all. although I do think type r still sounds better for a similar feel, though they are quite a bit louder.
INTRO
the hydras are another XLLAB design featuring the newest molds with D shape tactile bump. they feature a pom stem (3mm travel), pc top housing with light diffuser, P2 bottom and your choice of a 50g or 58g spring.
these are the first out of the newest tactiles from hmx that ive tried. surprisingly I only recently tried type r and just loved the feel on those, so was really looking forward to trying the hmx version.
SOUND
the sound on these is pretty satisfying, not super loud and harsh and not at all thin. the tactility gives them a different sound compared to what we're use to with hmx linears or the light tactiles. similar to the firecrackers these are extra full and slightly deeper than most hmx. but I will say, I think type r still sound better. they are fuller and poppier, but are decently louder at the same time.
there's no scratch to these from the pc top, though I do think the top out is a little plasticy.
QUALITY / FEEL
the quality on these great, even with newer switch types, hmx still brings excellent quality and consistency.
the feel is just amazing though, honestly these D shape tactiles are slowly converting me to tactiles. these feel really close to type R, the tactility is there throughout the travel, barely any linear post travel. even though the travel is super short they dont feel too fatiguing to type on or anything.
before these and type r I mainly only liked the super light tactles and ofc linears. I think these are making want to switch XD
(two more tactile reviews and I will be certified tactile expert)
FINAL THOUGHTS
D bump tactiles have been popping up all over the place after type r, understandably so. didn't get the hype for type r until I tried them, they really are too good, the tactility is just super super satisfying.
even though these are super similar to type r in feel, they are still very different in sound and do provide a few different spring options for those who prefer lighter or heavier springs. and even though these are more expensive than the usual hmx linear switch they are still about $0.08/switch less than type r.
I dont think these replace type r or anything but just bring some more options. if you enjoy type r but maybe wanted a slightly quieter higher pitched version these should be perfect. another great switch from XLLAB.
thanks for stopping by and I hope you found the video and review helpful! 💙
