In today's live stream we're going to take a look at the textual variant in Matthew 1:25. The Critical Text under the influence of the modern eclectic method says that Mary gave birth to "a son", whereas the Byzantine Text, including the Textus Recetpus, F35, and the majority text say she gave birth to "her firstborn Son".
This textual variant represents the 1st in a series of 50 which were selected for the Byzantine Text 2026 edition for special treatment. In the edition, these 50 have their regular entry in the apparatus, but also a second apparatus that contains manuscript details. One can see at a glance that the overwhelming evidence is in support of the Byzantine reading, but why do the Critical editions go with the smallest minority? Let's talk about that.
