A beautiful exposition of the raag, via alaap, jod & jhala, by one of the greatest exponents of the rudraveena, played in the Khandarbani style.
An excerpt from an article in the Hindu:
Asad Ali Khan was born in Rampur in 1934, into the seventh generation of a family of celebrated Rudra veena players who received royal patronage.
His great-grandfather was Rajab Ali Khan, head of the musicians at the Jaipur court.
His grandfather, Musharraf Khan, was a musician at the court of Alwar. Musharraf Khan performed in London in 1886.
His father, Sadiq Ali Khan, was also a musician at the Alwar court. He later settled in Rampur. In the last years of his life, Sadiq Ali Khan taught in Lucknow at the Bhatkhande College of Music.
Asad Ali Khan trained under his father till his demise in 1964.
Asad Ali Khan was a maestro who refused to compromise on the exacting standards of the Dhrupad legacy he represented, the Khandar style of the Jaipur Beenkar gharana. He was known not to approve of fusion music as a way of popularising the classical.
He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1977.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2008.
Recognised in his time not only as an exponent of an increasingly rare instrument but also the last living master of his gharana, he was employed at the University of Delhi’s faculty of fine arts and music. Ironically, however, there were no aspirants to learn the Rudra veena, and he taught the sitar till voluntarily relinquishing the post after many years.
His disciples include his adopted son, Ali Zaki Hadar, the torchbearer of his legacy, and others including Carsten Wicke, Bikramjeet Das and vocalist Madhumita Ray.
