Iran struck a desalination plant in Bahrain with a drone, while Tehran says a U.S. attack damaged a similar facility on Qeshm Island, disrupting water supply to around 30 villages. In a region where freshwater is scarce, desalination plants are essential.

Across the Gulf, these facilities provide the majority of drinking water — including about 90 percent in Kuwait, 86 percent in Oman, and 70 percent in Saudi Arabia.

As strikes hit these critical systems, the conflict is beginning to threaten something even more basic than energy or infrastructure: the region’s access to water.
