Ann Berry Somers is an award-winning teacher of biology and wildlife conservation at UNC-Greensboro. She teaches courses on sea turtles in Costa Rica, coral reef conservation in the Caribbean, and one called Wildness as Teacher (field trips within NC). She is the founder of the 100-year state-wide box turtle study called The Box Turtle Connection, now in its 12th year. This Citizen Science effort involves over 32 trained Project Leaders collecting data on box turtles at sites across North Carolina. Somers is a consultant for the turtle conservation project at the University of Bengkulu in Sumatra, Indonesia and serves on the Board of Directors of the N.C. Wildlife Federation.
Jeff Hall is the Partners in Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Biologist for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and a leading citizen science researcher. He currently serves on the Executive Council and is past President of the N.C. Herpetological Society. Hall is respected for his work on ephemeral (non-lasting) pool creation for Carolina gopher frogs and bog turtle swamps, and for research on the last remaining populations of eastern diamondback rattlers in the state.
