Although fixie points and street cred are arbitrarily awarded and based on socially constructed standards, that doesn't mean they don't matter. Your fixie points and street cred determine your social status in the fixed gear community; it determines how much respect you get and permeates your interactions within the community.

Caring what other people think about us can be viewed as a sign of weakness, so a lot of times, we pretend we don't care. In reality, our behavior suggests otherwise; we build expensive fixed gears with the stiffest components, NJS or UCI track certification, and seek framesets with steep track-specific angles for little to no real world benefits. There's a disconnect between our words and our actions, but our actions reveal the truth.

Here is exactly why fixed gear street cred matters and the ways we seek to increase it.


As stated in part one of Fixed Gear Street Cred Explained, I am fully aware that I am likely to get a lot of hate from this video since a lot of what I argue is experienced on a subconscious level and conflicts with people's rationales.

I will quietly laugh at disrespectful disagreements argued without logic and evidence, so feel free to call me an "elitist, hipster a**hole." With that said, you are welcome to respectfully disagree with my arguments to generate interesting discussion.
