A preventative maintenance step for these cars.
If the EGR pipe is blocked and in combination with a blocked EGR manifold, it can lead to higher engine temperatures. The result of which? a head gasket failure at around 150K miles.
Cleaning the pipe is a straight forward enough method of helping to avoid such a situation.
An oil catch can is also helpful as an install, which NutsAboutBolts covers in his excellent maintenance series.
