St. Patrick (387– 461 AD) was a missionary and bishop who brought Christianity to Ireland, becoming its patron saint. Born in Roman Britain, his father was a deacon and grandfather a priest. At age 16, Irish pirates captured and sold St. Patrick into slavery in Ireland for 6 years. He found comfort in prayer while having profound spiritual visions from God. Guided by a divine vision, he escaped back to Britain. He later returned to Ireland and was a cleric and bishop. In Ireland, St. Patrick preached to the pagans, established churches, ordained priests, and converted many, including chieftains and druids. He used the 3-leafed shamrock to explain the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity following biblical scripture. (Matthew 28:19) "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Legend says after being attacked by snakes during a 40-day fast on a hill, St. Patrick cast them out from Ireland forcing them into the sea, symbolically showing his role in converting Ireland from paganism to Christianity, as snakes often symbolize evil and pagan beliefs.
