Winter and Spring Swing on Laughter and Sighs

Winter and spring, swing on laughter and sighs,
That eternal ring, where my rod of music lies.
Is it your wish to bind me in a wreathe—
These scented melodies, my only sheath?

Is my sleep washed then in my heart’s raging floods,
The mad wind’s wave rocks the ever-mourning woods,
Dusk and dawn, my dirges tremble and seethe,
Is it your wish to bind me in a wreathe—

Night’s nest is unfinished for errors of my workaday,
Though I found no leave from service to spend away.
O where is peace in the ancient cosmic spheres,
The stabbing strife turns to the veena’s tears,
O this undying burning, for the song-flame to breathe,

কান্নাহাসির-দোল-দোলানো পৌষ-ফাগুনের পালা,
তারি মধ্যে চিরজীবন বইব গানের ডালা-
এই কি তোমার খুশি, আমায় তাই পরালে মালা

তাই কি আমার ঘুম ছুটেছে, বাঁধ টুটেছে মনে,
খ্যাপা হাওয়ার ঢেউ উঠেছে চিরব্যথার বনে,
কাঁপে আমার দিবানিশার সকল আঁধার আলা!
এই কি তোমার খুশি, আমায় তাই পরালে মালা
সুরের-গন্ধ-ঢালা?।
রাতের বাসা হয় নি বাঁধা দিনের কাজে ত্রুটি,
বিনা কাজের সেবার মাঝে পাই নে আমি ছুটি।
শান্তি কোথায় মোর তরে হায় বিশ্বভুবন-মাঝে,
অশান্তি যে আঘাত করে তাই তো বীণা বাজে।
নিত্য রবে প্রাণ-পোড়ানো গানের আগুন জ্বালা-

English Transliteration of Tagore’s Original Song

kannahasir-dol-dolano poush-phaguner pala,
tari moddhe chirojibon boibo ganer dala—
ei ki tomar khushi, amay tai porale mala
surer-gondho-dhala?

tai ki amar ghum chhuteche, bandh tutechhe mone,
khyapa hawar dheu uthechhe chirobyathar bone,
kaanpe amar dibanishar sokol andhar ala!
ei ki tomar khushi, amay tai porale mala
surer-gondho-dhala?

rater basha hoy ni bandha diner kaje truti,
bina kajer sebar majhe pai ne ami chhuti.
shanti kothay mor tore hai bishwabhuban-majhe,
ashanti je aghat kore tai to beena baje.
nitya robe pran-porano ganer agun jwala —
ei ki tomar khushi, amay tai porale mala
surer-gondho-dhala?
