Marcus Westbury is the founder of Renew Newcastle and Renew Australia, an organization that focuses on city revitalization through short and medium-term creative uses of spaces that are currently vacant and disused or awaiting redevelopment. By investing in local artists, cultural projects, and community groups, these spaces can be filled with life and prosperity and maintained until they become commercially viable or are redeveloped. The inspiration came from his hometown, Newcastle, a post-industrial steel making city with about 150 to 200 empty buildings in the two main streets. Over 8 years, 250 projects were launched under Renew Newcastle, turning into 70 viable businesses and maintaining 150 buildings.

Marcus is an urbanist, writer, media maker, and festival director. He manages multiple arts events, community projects, and social enterprises across Australia. He is the author of the crowd-funded Amazon best selling book “Creating Cities” and has been the writer and presenter of the ABC Australia TV series “Bespoke” and “Not Quite Art”. In 2016 Marcus became the inaugural CEO of the social enterprise Contemporary Arts Precincts Ltd that is leading the development of the Collingwood Arts Precinct in Melbourne. Marcus advises governments and businesses while speaking and writing extensively about creativity, culture, and placemaking.
