Описание: It is very hard to find authentic gyro sandwiches in the US. And the frozen gyro meat I bought a few times is just not worth eating. I am not claiming that my recipe is authentic but this is the best possible way I can recreate this family-favorite Greek sandwich at home. I hope you will like it too.❤️

MEK Gyro Sandwich

1 lb ground lamb- 90/10
1 lb ground beef- 90/10
2 large onions
6 garlic cloves
Fresh rosemary leaves
Fresh oregano
Fresh parsley
1 tsp dried thyme
2 long red chilies- dried
1 tsp paprika powder
1 tsp cumin powder
2 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ cup fresh bread crumbs

Tzatziki sauce:
2 cups plain yogurt
2 small cucumbers- shredded (Squeeze the moisture out if the yogurt is on the runny side)
Fresh mint- chopped
A big squeeze of lemon juice
1 tbsp honey
Salt and black pepper

Pita bread:
3 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup whole-wheat-flour
1 tbsp sugar
2 ¼ tsp yeast
3 tbsp olive oil
1 ¼ cup warm water
2 tsp salt

Assembly:
Lettuce
Sliced cucumbers
Sliced onions
French fries
Thinly sliced bell peppers

Dissolve yeast and sugar in ¼ cup warm water. Add sugar to it and let it foam. Add yeast mixture to the flour along with oil and the rest of the water and knead. Knead it for a few minutes then add salt. Continue kneading till you have a soft and smooth pliable dough. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for an hour or until doubled in size.

Heat the oven to 500 F.
Uncover the dough and divide it into eight equal portions. Roll into balls and spread them. Transfer two of the rolled-out dough pieces to a baking tray and place them in the oven. Bake it for 5-8 minutes. The baking time depends on the tray material. You will see the pitas will puff up. Don’t overcook your pitas as we are not looking for their tops to turn brown.
Continue baking your bread till all the dough is finished.

Combine all the gyro meat ingredients given in the first list. Add all of it to the bowl of the food processor. Process till everything is very well processed. Transfer to a well-oiled baking dish and pat on it to shape it. Cover it and bake it at 400 F for 40 minutes. Then remove it from the oven and let it stand for 30-60 minutes.

Combine all the tzatziki sauce ingredients and mix them. Slice the gyro meat into thin slices. You can also fry them in some butter for extra flavor.
Assemble your gyro sandwich as can be seen in the video and enjoy it with your family.😋
