In the language of Vedānta, Viveka (विवेक) is not mere intelligence or judgment. It is the light of discernment that separates the Real from the unreal, the eternal from the transient, the Self from the not-Self.
In Vivekachudamani (verse 19), Ādi Śaṅkarācārya describes this as the first and foremost qualification for spiritual realization: the ability to see clearly what truly is. The Bhagavad Gītā echoes this truth — “the unreal has no existence, and the real never ceases to be” (2.16).
When this inner clarity matures, the seeker no longer stands between two choices — real and unreal. The illusion of duality dissolves, and there remains only the unmistakable awareness of the One Reality.
The uses a paraphrased reflection of this insight, offering an accessible expression of the timeless essence of Viveka.
