Will Meta Glasses Destroy Your Privacy?

Meta is the company that was previously known as Facebook.

Unfortunately, there are now many examples online where the glasses have been misused to record others without their knowledge. This footage is often uploaded online, where people are insulted and abused. As it is legal to record people in a public place in the UK, people have very little recourse to have footage of them taken down.

Meta has also been behaving in problematic ways. It covertly downloaded facial recognition software to the companion app that is required to use Meta glasses. Internally, the company referred to this "feature" as NameTag.

Every time that the AI features of the glasses are used, footage taken by the glasses is sent to Meta's servers. This is then used to train Meta's AI. In Kenya, employees at a company subcontracted by Meta called Sama were able to see private moments that the glasses had recorded - usually without the awareness or the consent of the owner.

In this video, I expand on these issues with the glasses, and suggest some solutions that the British government could consider.
