South Asia in China’s Shifting Peripheral Diplomacy

About the Seminar
The Communist Party of China held its first-ever Central Conference on Peripheral Work in April 2025. The conference signalled a significant shift in the nature of China’s engagement with neighbouring countries. The meeting concluded that “China’s relationships with countries in its periphery are currently in their best period since the modern era began, but they have also entered an important stage of deep interaction between the regional landscape and a changing world”. It also outlined the objective of building a community of common destiny with peripheral countries.

During the seminar, the speaker will discuss the key insights from the conference and its implications for China’s engagement with the countries in South Asia.
