This is an interesting type of armor, basically the footsoldier's cheaper alternative to a plate harness. It's not very heavy and provides excellent protection, and it doesn't need to be perfectly fitted to the wearer the way that a knight's suit of armor does.

This is also the closest historical equivalent to what is referred to as splint / splinted armor in roleplaying games.
