Hi, I’m David Meaney Vice president of Sales for ECS Incorporated. In today’s video we will discussing the history of Quartz and its use as a high-quality Resonator.
To understand the history of quartz we need to examine what it is. Quartz is a mineral made of Silicon Dioxide, that is found in abundance in nature. In fact, Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in Earth’s crust. from the earliest of times; water-clear crystals were known to the ancient Greeks as krystallos. And that’s where the name crystal comes from.
The name quartz is an old German word of uncertain origin. We see it first used by world renown mineralogist Georgius Agricola dating as far back as the 1530’s. Quarts has long been thought to possess super natural powers and have been prized for their ability to clear the mind of negativity and to enhance a higher spiritual receptiveness.
Quartz's piezoelectric properties were first noticed by Jacques and Pierre Curie in 1880. They discovered that if you applied Piezen (Greek word for pressure) on Quartz it created electricity. Today that is known as the Piezoelectric Effect.
The first quartz oscillator was developed by Walter Guyton Cady in 1921. And with the help of men like George Washington Pierce & Warren Marrison, the evolution of Quarts based clock continued and improved year after year.
As it is found in nature quartz has some minor imperfections and impurities, such as lithium, sodium, potassium, and even titanium that all maybe be present in the crystalline structure. In order to make High “Q” or Quality Crystals we must first process it through a giant pressure vessel know as an Autoclave. Raw Quarts and chemicals are added to the Autoclave and cooked at super-high temperatures and pressures exceeding 21,000 pounds per square inch. This eliminates the imperfections and unwanted minerals, allowing the quarts too form in to uniform crystalline ingots.
Through the early part of the 19 Century great inventors and thinkers All used this high-performance mineral to help develop their technologies. Like Marconi’s long distance wireless radio’s, Thomas Edison’s Telegraph and Phonograph & Nicola Tesla’s power generation and transmission to name a few.
The real development of Quartz Crystals as clocks for electronics came during World War II. Prior to the war, we had wired Telegraph and Telephones and the performance of radio crystals was largely inconsistent, but the need for wireless devices just hadn’t arisen yet. These Technological advancements were critical for the allies to gain an edge against the axis powers. The performance of tiny quartz Crystals in the allied Radio transceivers & RADAR Systems was the difference between victory and defeat. The heavy reliance on these crystals really pushed the technological advances in the manufacturing of dependable Quartz clocks.
In today’s high tech world you can hardly escape Quartz Crystal technology, In your clocks, TV’s, Refrigerators, microwave ovens, Radio’s, Computers, If you walk out you door, the watch on your wrist, Car entry FOB, and your cell phone will have as many 10 quartz crystal clocks inside them. As you get in your car you are surrounded by more than 100 clocks that monitor your cars performance, keeping you safe and allowing you to enjoy some comforts as you travel.
Quartz has been around for well over 130 years. There are new technologies advancing that have some promise to challenge Quartz, Like: Silicon PLL’s, Surface Acoustical Wave & Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems. But none have been able to offer the High “Q” performance of Quartz Crystals. I expect Quartz to remain king of timing for decades to come.
