Years later, that sound echoed again—this time inside his head—as he imagined a man sitting in a prison cell, knowing freedom was roaring past him but never stopping. The song grew darker, sharper, fueled by stories Cash heard from soldiers, inmates, and the restless ghosts of America’s back roads. When he finally stood inside Folsom Prison in 1968, the room crackled with truth. The prisoners didn’t cheer for polish; they roared for honesty. As Cash sang about regret, trains, and time doing its worst work, the walls seemed to breathe. For a moment, music unlocked the cells. And though the doors stayed shut, every man inside felt the rails shake beneath him, carrying freedom just close enough to hear.
