Manipur unrest: Women stand guard for peace in Ukhrul’s Litan

Women from villages in Manipur’s Litan have stepped forward to help maintain peace following the violence that broke out in the area on February 8, 2026. The incident in Ukhrul district left more than 70 homes burnt and displaced hundreds of people from the Tangkhul and Kuki communities.

Amid the tension, women from Tangkhul villages have stationed themselves along the highway at Mahadev, about 35 kilometres from Litan Bazaar. Their aim is to monitor the movement of vehicles and people to prevent any further incidents. Many of these volunteers are young mothers, while some are over the age of 70.

According to Pemmi Varu, Vice-President of the Yaingangpokpi Area Women Organisation, the initiative began soon after the violence. Due to the small population in the area, women of different age groups have joined the effort, except those who are breastfeeding.

Mahadev is usually a busy stopover for travellers along the Imphal–Ukhrul road, where farmers sell vegetables and other produce. However, after the Litan incident, the market area has largely remained empty.

Despite family responsibilities and other challenges, the women continue their patrols with sticks and handmade torches. Their presence along the highway has become an important effort by the local community to prevent further violence and maintain peace in the area.
