This is a video of my ride on bicycle from Pattan to Haripur during my Indus River bicycle tour. Cycling along the mighty Indus River (Abasin) is not just a journey, it’s a passage through history, nature, culture, and the soul of Pakistan.
In this cinematic travel documentary, I take you along my bicycle route from Pattan to Haripur, riding through towering mountains, thundering rivers, peaceful lakes, and ancient landscapes that have shaped civilizations for thousands of years. This video captures what it truly feels like to travel beside the Indus, the river that begins in the highest mountains, nourishes the plains, and finally meets the Arabian Sea.
My journey begins in Pattan, a breathtaking mountain city that feels as if the earth has raised it like a dream. Known for its stark contrasts, Pattan sits high above the Indus River, where harsh, rugged cliffs overlook soft flowing water. Here, the river and the people share a deep emotional bond living with it, surviving its floods, rebuilding after its destruction, and celebrating its calmness. This city stands as a reminder of the resilience of humanity and the force of nature.
As I cycle through Pattan after a night of rain, the morning unfolds like a painting, clouds hugging mountains, sunlight drawing golden lines on peaks, and terraced houses rising toward the sky. Every turn brings a new scene: green fields, rocky trails, waterfalls, and water channels flowing from the mountains directly into the Indus. These small channels carry stories of communities that depend on the river for life itself.
Moving forward, I enter the outskirts of Haripur, where an entirely different landscape opens up Tarbela Lake, a stunning blue oasis surrounded by proud mountains reflecting in its calm surface. Here the Indus slows down, gathers its strength, and rests before continuing its journey southward. In summer, when glaciers melt, the river rises dramatically, sometimes as high as fifty feet crashing into rocks with a thunder that shakes the earth. This is why locals call it Abasin, “the father of rivers.”
Around Haripur, the river becomes gentle, wide, and calm. It irrigates vast fields, supports farming communities, and brings life to hundreds of settlements. This part of the journey shows the softer, nurturing side of the Indus contrasting sharply with the wild force of its mountain regions. The valleys of Hazara echo with its roar, while the plains of Punjab and Sindh rely on its blessings.
Through this video, you will experience the true identity of the Indus River, a river that is sometimes peaceful, sometimes fierce; sometimes a storm, sometimes silence. Traveling along it makes you realize that the Indus is not just water, it is history, culture, geography, memory, and emotion. It is the mirror of human existence.
As I cycle beside its banks, I feel as though I’m not riding next to the river, the river is carrying me. Its breeze, its sound, and its presence flow directly into the heart. This river not only shapes the land, it shapes the soul.
