Did Charles Schulz Know What He Was Talking About?
Luke 2:1-20
Who knows what the facts of Jesus's birth actually were? An honest reading of Matthew and Luke indicates that even his biographers weren’t quite sure. But odds are, if we had been in Israel in those days, we might well have seen and heard things that would be hard to explain, let alone reconcile with modern science. But of course, science and explanations are not the point, because the nativity narratives are not primarily interested in the facts of Jesus’s birth, as much as the significance, the meaning. Whether there were ten million angels there or just Mary and Joseph, when Jesus was born the whole course of history was changed. THAT is a fact as hard and blunt as any fact. Art, music, literature, culture, political institutions, our whole understanding of ourselves and our world…it is impossible to conceive how differently world history would have developed, if Jesus had not been born. And in terms of faith, much more must be said because, for faith, the birth of Jesus into the darkness of the world made possible not just a new way of understanding life, but a new way of living it.
