In this clip, Matthew explains how to properly compare Bitcoin to money printing by focusing on central bank balance sheets rather than headline aggregates like M1 or M2. He begins with the Federal Reserve, clarifying that the Fed balance sheet effectively represents the monetary base, regardless of whether money is created for banks, the Treasury, or physical cash. Measured this way, Bitcoin’s market capitalization now equals roughly 27 to 28 percent of the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet, a milestone that highlights how far Bitcoin has already penetrated the monetary system.
Matthew then expands the analysis across currencies, showing Bitcoin relative to the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, and their historical balance sheet expansions. In euro terms, Bitcoin is slightly ahead of its long term trend, sitting near 24 percent penetration versus a modeled expectation closer to 16 percent. In sterling terms, the comparison is even more striking. Bitcoin’s market cap now exceeds the Bank of England balance sheet by roughly 172 percent, approaching a full doubling.
