"The US has made many groundless statements. Take the example of Iraq, the US has been saying there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. But up to now, they have not been found there. If the US knows what Iran is hiding, they should make a report to IAEA. Then we want inspectors to come and check."

STORYLINE:

Iran has agreed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to accept nuclear inspectors from the UN nuclear watchdog from March 27, according to a senior Iranian official in charge of nuclear issues visiting Japan on Tuesday.

Speaking to the media at the Japan National Press Club, Dr. Hassan Rouhani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council said Iran has agreed on the resumption of the international nuclear inspections on an unconditional basis.

But the timing of resumption is two weeks later than the IAEA wanted because the initially proposed date coincided with Iran''s New Year holidays.

Iran welcomes its new year this Saturday morning local time.

Rouhani said Iran''s nuclear programme is solely for peaceful use of atomic energy and that the country believes all nations should take part in and abide by international nuclear nonproliferation pacts.

The United States, however, suspects Iran is secretly developing nuclear arms and is demanding full disclosure of its sensitive nuclear programmes.

Rouhani is scheduled to meet Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi on Wednesday and with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Thursday morning.
