"A lot of those old houses, in fact 99.9 percent have disappeared. But there are still a few. And I am glad to say the NCMM, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, a few of the officers in that organisation, are trying very hard to preserve some of them. They are part of not just their heritage but our heritage as well."

"There was a strong Portuguese influence here, and you see some remnants of that. There was a strong Brazilian influence and you see quite a lot of that still displayed on Lagos Island. A lot of these were returned slaves who had now decided they were going to settle in Lagos and they brought back with them their own building culture. You also see the edifices of colonial tropical architecture."

"We will restore Ilojo Bar, which is one of the old Brazilian buildings, and many others that are around. When I say many (holds up hands) count them on two hands, something like that. Still good, still got families there who has some respect for their family and would like to keep them. But they need finance to do that. I mean Ilojo Bar is going to cost over fifty million naira (318,000 US dollars) really to put it right."

The expansion of Nigeria''s largest city, Lagos, means many historic buildings are beginning to crumble to dust.
It will take millions of dollars to repair them or they''ll be lost forever.
