Join us as we explore the stunning Maha'ulepu Trail on a stormy day on the south shore of Kauai.
This scenic coastal trail offers dramatic ocean views, rugged limestone cliffs, secluded beaches, and wide-open landscapes that feel untouched and wild.
Starting at Shipwreck Beach, the trail goes along the coastline with constant views of the ocean crashing against the rocks. The terrain is mostly exposed, so expect wind, sun, and expansive sky views the entire way.
Along the way, we passed the beautifully manicured Poipu Bay Golf Course, where we were lucky enough to meet the nēnē — Hawaii’s state bird. Seeing these rare and endangered Hawaiian geese roaming freely near the coast was such a special moment.
The Maha'ulepu Trail is moderately easy and mostly flat, making it perfect for a relaxed coastal hike with incredible photo opportunities.
If you’re visiting Kauai, this trail is a must if you want a mix of ocean drama, open landscapes, and wildlife. And if you are lucky enough to get there during a storm like we were, that's the cherry on top.
