But 22,000ft above the Nevada desert this was no video game, with billions of pounds worth of US and UK fighting tech pushed to their limits.

Elite pilots are experiencing what it would be like to be caught up in a deadly conflict amid Beijing’s relentless ambition to dominate air, space and the cyber world.

Photography of the fifth-generation stealth fighters was banned during “the world’s largest, most realistic combat training event” but The Sun watched from the cockpit.

The yearly wargaming exercise is not a drill or a rehearsal of an operation, but a live simulated battle against the West’s greatest adversaries.

450 British personnel, the tanker, a UK spy plane and a dozen Typhoons joined 1,500 Americans and Australians to train fighting with B2 bombers, high tech cyber warriors and intelligence officers.

The “Blue Team” allies battled against “Red Team” foes in a bombing mission to take out enemy radar stations in just one day of the two week exercise that sees every move analysed blow by blow.

RAF Master Aircrew Andrew Welham-Jones told The Sun “It’s basically videoed very much like that scene from Top Gun. And we’ll be able to see where the Red enemy was at the time and where the Blue forces were, and to see where everybody joined in the fight.”

Lieutenant Colonel Ryan “Chip” Young of the 65th Aggressors, who led the Red Team fighters, said he studies enemy tactics “literally every day” to provide the more realistic dog fighting scenarios.

Each day the flag above Nellis Air Force base on the outskirts of Las Vegas has the winning team’s colours flying above the losers – with the Blue team victorious during our visit to the exercise.

“At the end of the day it’s about coming together to kick some a**”, said US Airforce Colonel Tony May, director of the live action war game.
