Losses in Transformer | Copper Loss, Iron Loss & Other Losses Explained
A transformer is one of the most important devices in power systems. But like every electrical machine, it is not 100% efficient and has some losses. In this video, we explain all the types of losses in a transformer in a simple way.
👉 Main Transformer Losses:
1. Core Loss (Iron Loss):
Includes Hysteresis Loss (due to magnetization & demagnetization of core)
And Eddy Current Loss (due to circulating currents in the core)
2. Copper Loss:
Caused by resistance of winding when current flows (I²R loss).
3. Dielectric Loss:
Small loss in transformer insulation when subjected to alternating voltage.
4. Stray Losses & Other Losses:
Due to leakage flux, mechanical vibration, and harmonics.
👉 Key Point:
These losses reduce efficiency, but with good quality core material, proper winding, and design, transformer efficiency can reach up to 98–99%.
This video from Electric Fever will help you clearly understand copper loss, iron loss, dielectric loss, and other losses in transformer with practical explanation.
