Jaron Lanier on theory and AI, delivered as the inaugural Leon Cooper Lecture at the Brown Center for Theoretical Physics and Innovation.
Lanier argues "AI" is a marketing term, not a technical one — and that the shift we need isn't smarter models but a change in how we describe them. Reframing AI as a collaboration of people (rather than an emerging alien intelligence) changes everything: scientific citation, economics, the future of theory, and what we should actually be studying.
Topics include the Turing Test as a trap, the confusion between two incompatible meanings of "information," opening the black box through counterfactual cluster estimation, why the most interesting mystery in AI is hiding in the English department, and an alternate-history thought experiment about Turing and von Neumann arriving before Newton. Q&A follows, plus a musical performance.
